Geocache Description:

A chance for West Midland Geocachers to put something back into “our playing field” by removing rubbish or carrying out other useful tasks for Warwickshire Wildlife Trust at a local reserve. LAST UPDATE 17 MAY 2008.

As far as I know there has not been a CITO event in the Midlands area so this could be the first chance to get the CITO icon on your geocache list.

WHEN?
Saturday 31st May 2008 9.30am onwards

WHERE?
The idea at the moment is to do some work at Priory Fields Nature Reserve for 2 to 3 hours on a sunny Saturday morning and then have a sociable lunch in the open air before spending the afternoon doing a bit of caching.

Priory Fields is a 5.4 ha (13 acre) site managed by WWT under licence from Birmingham City Council. It is an oasis for wildlife in a heavily developed area and includes a stream and marsh adjacent to the Stratford Canal but the most important features of the reserve are its acidic grassland and heathland.

DOING WHAT?
Because it has open access the general public can wander freely into the reserve and hence litter and doogy-do's can be a problem. Nearby is The Shire Country Park and The Millstream Way which also suffer from litter and fly tipping. The Wildlife Trust want to use the site more for educational visits by schools and are trying to get local volunteers to tidy the area up but there's still a lot to do.

Meet at the Yardley Wood entrance at the above co-ordinates (SP101791) at 9.30 am wearing stout footwear / wellies and bring gloves. The Park Rangers have now agreed to provide black bags and some litter-pickers of sizes suitable for both children and adults.

WHERE’S THE FUN COME IN?
There will be log sheet / disclaimer to sign at the start and this will be used to draw the FTF, STF, TTF etc.

There will also be a small ‘swag bag’ of goodies for all participants and a complimentary glass of wine to drink will be provided for you to drink while you eat your sandwiches (the latter will not provided by the organisers). There will be prizes for the most unusual item of rubbish collected, the youngest rubbish collector, the oldest rubbish collector and the most stylish rubbish collector.

There are already 8 caches within 1 mile of the meeting place but as most of these will already have been found by local cachers, there will be 8 or 9 new caches of diverse types (including an Earthcache) made available to those who attend the event, so there will be a good chance of getting at least one FTF! Check out the hints for the 'special equipment' you may need to bring.

Apart from discovering geocoins that people might bring to show or move, there could be a swop session for unactivated geocoins if people care to bring some along.

Thanks to Steve & Marina for the following travel information:-

Shirley Station is close at hand and the number 12 bus runs every 12 minutes during the day from the city centre. The closest stop is at the junction of Priory Road/Slade Lane (150m away).
Across the south of Birmingham, buses 49 & 69 run every 20 minutes during the day and their closest stop is at the junction of High St/Aqueduct Road (400m away).

There's not a huge amount of car parking in the vicinity as lots of houses have driveways onto the roads but there should be spaces along Bach Mill Drive and Coton Grove. Nethercote Gardens has lots of parking too but it's mostly bay parking and some residents can be a bit protective of parking bays outside their house. You might also be able to find a parking space on the dual carriageway section of Priory Road.
