Geocache Description:

A challenging tramp through the ecological reserve to near the summit. Reserve info at www.maungatrust.org

Closest access is from Hicks Road off Maungatautari Road. Park at S37 59.636 E175 34.719 Walk up accessway across farm paddocks until the reserve predator proof fence is reached. Enter through the right hand gates leading to "Old mountain/Summit Track". The route follows the fenceline maintenance road for 20 minutes before a clearly marked turn onto the track proper. This climbs steadily and steeply in parts for about 1hr 30 min. to an intersection near the summit. Follow the track sign to the summit trig which is only a level 10 minutes further on.

This expedition can be extended slightly by returning to the track intersection and taking the right hand option for about 30 min to the "Hook Nose" cache which has good views north. Return the same way to your vehicle.
Alternatively, if you can arrange another vehicle at Tari Road end, Pukeatua, a full mountain crossing can be done by continuing on past the trig (about 6 hours total) which will enable you to take in views to the South/West while locating "Pukeatua Peak" cache on the way.

Expect muddy shoes once going beyond the trig and at all times look for and follow orange triangle markers. (There are various predator monitoring tracks passed which use Pink or Yellow markers which should be ignored).
