Geocache Description:

Your Boots will get wet, the Kea will wake you up at Dawn clumping around on the roof and you have to work hard to get this cache, hidden at 1074m ASL. If you are not careful, you could get trapped by rising rivers.

Before you even think of heading up here, visit (visit link)

This is a classic weekend tramp, a great place to see native birds, and the high point of the Iconic Coast to Coast multisport race. Occasionaly, This place can have muggles way beyond what you would normaly expect in this sort of environment, but most of the time it is not too bad. There is a major Stoat and Possum controll programme happening in both valleys, funded by the Coast to Coast Race director Robin Judkins that has resulted in at least 15 Blue Duck (Whio) chicks being raised in the area this year. The country is rugged and spectacular and while it is possible for the fit and fast to do this as a day trip, the through trip is to be throughly recomended. In late January there is often a very spectacular Rata bloom which can turn the bush crimson for a few weeks. Tui are now common in the Deception along with Wood Pigeon (Kereu). Native Falcon (Karearea) are also present and you can hear Kiwi from the hut at night. (Dont leave your wet boots outside though, the KEA will destroy them then wake you up playing games on the roof) If you have time and the ability, a trip up to Lake Mavis is well worth while. Do take a camera, and appropriate clothing as you will be climbing well above the bushline. This is hidden where you wont damage any plant life.
