Who, you ask, is Nathan Radley?
Arthur's brother, of course. Arthur, aka "Boo", was a 35
year-old seclusive hermit of Maycomb, Georgia, in the 1930's. Boo
(pictured) was known as a recluse, an innocent, a misunderstood man
who chose to participate in society on his own terms.
To those in the know, Boo is one of the pioneering visionaries of
geocaching. Boo knew the thrill of the hunt; the excitement of the
find; the mystique of the ordinary having a greater, more secretive
meaning than itself; the childlike giddiness of new swag. Whether
he left gum, soap-carved figures, coins, or a valuable pocket
watch, Boo knew the excitement of a cache was found not just in the
finding or the taking, but also in the giving.
To the despair of the fortunate few who knew Boo's caching
generousity, one day Boo's cache was sealed with concrete.
Muggling, in its earliest form, had occurred at the hands of Boo's
older brother, one Nathan Radley. Boo's cache adventure-and his
attempts to reach out to those around him-were squelched in one
swipe of concrete mortar.
The geocaching community owes Boo a salutatory "thank you" for
the spirit of his cache. Though his cache experiment ended in an
untimely manner, it brought great joy to those around him.
Mr. Nathan Radley, this cache is for you; may you never find it,
and may the likes of you never ruin a cacher's fun.
