Geocache Description:

Latte Stones – A Site to See

Just off a white sandy beach on the northwest side of Guam are Ancient Chamorro sites consisting of several Latte Stones.

Latte Stones are pillars of Ancient Chamorro houses made up of two pieces; The Haligi (column) and the Tasa (capstone). These stones are found all over and throughout the Marianas Islands.

The Haligi is made from coral limestone and the Tasa is usually made from a natural round coral head found in the reef. The most common being the Brain coral.

Due to the 500’ rule, I had to place the cache at a Lusong (ancient grinding stone). However, to get to the Lusong, I thought it would be nice to bring you to three Latte stone sites.

To get to the sites you may park your vehicle at Tanguisson beach park or at N13.32.615 E144.48.533

As with the hike to Cache by the sea and lost(found)pond, it is a fairly easy trek with just a few spots where you can choose to climb the sharp limestone rocks or walk in the water. Please bring lots of water and usual jungle items to keep you going strong.

The 1st site is located at N13.33.262 E144.48.745 approximately 242’ from the trailhead. The 2nd site is located about 60’ beyond the 1st at N13.33.264 E144.48.755. Approximately 64’ beyond the 2nd is the 3rd site at N13.33.272 E144.48.762.

1st site = 4 standing Haligi’s.
2nd site = 6 standing Haligi’s and 1 complete set (Haligi and Tasa) still intact.
3rd site = 2 standing haligi’s at opposite ends of each other.

The Lusong (cache site) is approximately 137’ from site 3.

It is noteworthy to mention that it is customary and traditional, that prior to entering any Chamorro ancestral site that you ask permission in silence from the Chamorro Ancestors to enter their place. Please remember that these sites are sacred to the Chamorro people and that you must treat it with your utmost respect.

I hope you enjoy this cache as much as I did putting it out. Special thanks to my son cjpinaula for showing me this place.
