One Temple

Every day Farley would stop at the temple make an offering and say a prayer before heading off to work. He was getting old, very old, and had hopes of having a son to carry on the tradition of tree trimming. When faith and hope leave you, there is little left. But he was a good man and clung to these principles tightly. When he was a hundred and eleven his faith paid off and his good wife bore him a son. Unfortunately, he was born without any arms. Farley was heartbroken at first, but his hope was strong and he decided that his son could still play a major part in his life. Everyday he would take little Farley to work with him and his son would watch his father sharpen his pruning knife before climbing into the trees to finish his labor of love. As his son grew older he developed into a strong young man with the same qualities as his father. He grew to love the trees and desired nothing more than to follow in his father’s footsteps. Farley, the ancient, decided to retire when little Farley was nineteen years old and it was decided that his tree trimming position would be filled by another. Many people applied, over fifty, and it was decided by the council that everyone would be given a chance to tryout for the job of head tree keeper. Old Farley was deeply saddened as he watched his son hope for the impossible as he tried to fill his father’s shoes. The day of the tryouts came and the whole island turned out to see who would take over for it was a very prestigious line of work.....Continued in log book
