Ancient Oceans

During the time period when oceans covered most of Ohio, silt, sand, clay and pebbles deposited on the bottom, were compacted together. Constant pressure form the overlaying materials and heat from geologic processes deep with the earth eventually formed the sedimentary rock that you see here.

Today in Hinckley Reservation, two rock layers formed from sediments in the ancient ocean have been exposed by erosion. In front of you are large boulders and rock walls that are composed of sand and pebbles. This rock layer is known as the Sharon Conglomerate, the youngest rock in our area. The Conglomerate here is exposed at the highest elevations in Northeast Ohio. Below this layer is a group of rock known collectively as the Cuyahoga Formation. The main rock type from this formation found in the Hinckley Reservation is composed of sandy silt and clay. This Shale is exposed along the east branch of the Rocky River and numerous creaks in the reservation.
