Train Spotting Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

d:): Sorry about letting the languish for so long. I actually removed the container months ago, and thought I had archived it. Apparently Norfolk Southern has had trouble with people taking objects from their train yards, and has started posting security guards from time to time. I actually was hastled by one of these guys in another area of town where there were no signs posted at all. Anyway, they don't want people in the area, so the cache is gone for now. I'll see if I can't find another spot for this at somepoint.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located in my favorite spot to go with my family to watch trains. It is located at a point between most of the major train yards in Atlanta. Almost every train that comes through Atlanta, will pass by this spot.

You can drive right down to within a few feet of the cache. To get to the cache take Foster Street off of Huff Road. DO NOT ATTEMPT REACHING THE CACHE FROM ANY OTHER DIRECTION. The end of Foster Street is gravel and not well maintained, but goes all the way down to the cache area. There is a signed crossing going into the area. STOP and LOOK! This is a very busy area, but fortunately the trains will only be traveling about 10mph. Follow the road around to the cache. YOU DON’T NEED TO GO ANYWHERE NEAR THE TRACKS.

There are many "No Tresspassing" signs posted around the old mill facility on the west side of Foster St as you drive in. Please observe these signs.

The cache is a very well concealed ammo can. The difficulty would be much higher, but I left a clue so that most geocachers will quickly recognize where the cache is hidden. Please but it back just as you found it, to avoid being discovered by muggles. Trains come through here very often. There is a decent chance you may have to wait for one to pass before you can exit the area. Once again, be alert and WATCH FOR TRAINS. The terrain is flat, but there are many briars and brush in this area. This and because you need to stay alert, I have rated the terrain a 3. I would suggest if you do bring young ones, leave them in the car and bring the cache to them.

I have rarely had to wait more than about 15 minutes for a train to pass. We often come after eating dinner in the area. The Amtrak Crescent is scheduled to pass about 7:45pm nightly, but is often running late. It runs down the track you crossed to get in here. If you are waiting on it, you can call 1-800-USA-RAIL and ask for the status of train #20.

Caches original contents are some toy trains, a train whistle, and other train related paraphernalia. Try to keep the theme going
