The cache is one of four hidden in the confines of the Berry Patch. The cache is a smaller sized ammo box.
The Berry Patch has a long history, since 1969, and is used by the Logansport School Corporation as an outdoor laboratory. In 2006, the Berry Patch was awarded the distinguished honor of being named “Outdoor Laboratory of the Year”, by the Indiana Tree Farm Committee. The Patch has 4 miles of trails, and is used by more than science classes. One of the English teachers has been known to teach the writings of Henry David Thoreau by a Pond that was built at no cost to the school corporation.
There are many different types of plant and animal life noticeable along the trail system. White tail deer, Raccoon, Eastern Box Turtle, and Red Tailed Hawk, among other species are found in the Berry Patch. Whether you enjoy a stroll through an open meadow or old growth woods, the Berry Patch will meet your needs.
Why is it called the Berry Patch? It has to do with the origins of the schools team name of the “Berries”. During the 1920s, there was a saying, "That's the berries!" The meaning then was "special", or "really something." This is one of the legends of how the name became attached to LHS. Perhaps it meant that the teams at Logansport were really special. The school has also used comic character Felix the Cat as a mascot since 1926 (which is the oldest mascot in the state of Indiana). At halftime of a basketball game that year, Curly Hupp, searching for a way to inspire his teammates to victory, placed a stuffed Felix doll on the playing floor for good luck. This tradition is still carried on today.
This series of caches in the Berry Patch have been placed with the support of the Logansport School Corporation. Thanks to the their cooperation, this local jewel can be shared with a greater number of people. Remember, this area is regularly used by the school corporation as an outdoor classroom. Please be respectful and don’t cache during school hours so the learning process is not compromised. Also, please avoid night caching in the area. Practice leave no trace caching and as always, Cache in Trash Out.
Trail maps are available at the trail heads. If possible, return the maps after your hike to keep costs down for reprints. I have included a scan of the trail map so that you may print off for your convenience. If parking at the recommended parking area,(N 40 44.958 W 086 19.775) by the tennis courts, start from Trailhead #2. Please avoiding parking in the small parking lot between the softball field, and baseball field. There aren’t any no parking signs posted, but I was kindly asked by school security to not park at this location.
Note: When on your way to “Berry Patch Trails II”, make sure to stop by and check out the pond. When finding “Berry Patch Trails III”, step out onto the lookout, you can see for miles. There is a FTF prize of lottery tickets ($5) in one of caches in this series. Enjoy!
