Geocache Description:

In the centre of Burton is the Washlands, and area of woodlands, meadows and wildfowl scrapes. Mixed in with the natural features of the Washlands are more formal landscaped gardens, paths and play areas to create a mix of natural and leisure amenities.

Close to the city centre of Burton, the Washlands has a long
history. In the 7th century a lady, St Modwen, was said to have built a chapel and settlement to Saint Andrew on Andresey Island. Since then the Washlands have been the site of invasions, abbeys and battles and is now and area for leisure and recreation.

Stapenhill Gardens (the other side of the river. Explore there with "Stapenhill Riverside") and the surrounding areas are renowned for their colourful display of bedding plants throughout the year. The gardens form the centerpiece of Burton’s Britain in Bloom entry.

A recent innovation is the Washlands Sculpture Trail, which was developed by artists and involved the help of the local community. The two sculptures at the beginning of the trail have been inspired by the story of Saint Modwen, the patron saint of Burton, who healed damaged eyes with water from the Washlands. The sculpture trail starts near the library.

There is no free parking on this side of the river, but there is pay and display parking near the cache, at the Library or leisure centre. Alternatively, and for a longer walk, use free parking on the other side of the river, which are given in “Stapenhill Riverside”.

The leisure centre has all the usual amenities, plus the loos if required. The library has an internet café, coffee shop, and some books I think. There is a large kiddies playground outside the library.

All paths are tarmac, and are level. Very easy cache for all, and a great place to bring the kids and dogs and bikes.

The cache is a 35mm film canister, and contains
a log and pencil. It can take mini-geocoins, or sawn off bugs!

Please note, this is a flood plain, and the cache may not be
accessible 52 weeks of the year.
