Cole's Cliff Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

BS Cracker.: This one is done. Not worth replacing the cache, so people can put shampoo bottles and silly putty into it to ruin everything.

I think its time for this one to go, and open the area for someone else to place a cache.

Thanx to everyone who has taken the time and effort to find, or even at least, attempt this one. I've enjoyed the logs you have all left.

Geocache Description:

Inspiration Point in Letchworth State Park is located at the top of a cliff, that is sometimes referred to as Cole's Cliff.
This is a very easy terrain rating, well suited for families. Make sure you bring a camera.
NOTE: From April to late Oct., there IS a fee to enter the west side of the park. Make sure you plan to make a day of it,
and visit the other great caches this side of the park has to offer.

The coords for the actual cache are N42°35.aaa W078°01.bbb

To get the value for the last three digits of the North coord, add 82 to the number of the PO Box.
To get the value for the last three digits of the West coord, subtract 4 from the last three digits of the ZIP code.
There are indeed two different zip codes, but either will get you close enough. The one I originally used for the cache has the last two digits the same number.

The final cache is a short distance away, and the terrain is relatively flat. I suggest taking the asphalt path
along the cliff edge and enjoying the scenery rather than beelining directly to the cache.

State Park permit number: LSP-23.

Now the history lesson:

In the early 1840's, while work was being done constructing the "Tunnel Section" of the Genesee Valley Canal
along the Genesee River gorge, the project engineer, and Rochester's 5th Mayor, Elisha Johnson had built himself
a magnificent lodge on a point above the route of the canal. It was named Hornby Lodge.

One person of note to stay at this lodge, was the then well known artist Thomas Cole. He had been commissioned by
the NY state Governor William H. Seward, to paint a unique New York scene. Cole then chose the Middle Falls on the Genesee River.
The view he chose also included the now famous Glen Iris (then just a farm house), as well as Hornby Lodge.
He chose a viewpoint above a cliff on the opposite side of the river from the Lodge. Ever since, this cliff has been known as Cole's Cliff.

The painting measured approx. 4ft x 6ft, or 6ft x 8ft in size. I'm not sure which.
The Cole painting now hangs in the Drawing Room of The William H. Seward Mansion in Auburn, NY.

The coords for the first stage are at the approximate location Cole painted his painting from.

Please visit my Hornby Lodge: Frontier Mansion cache (GC19EJJ) for more history on the
subject of Cole's painting, Hornby Lodge.
