Massachusetts' First Official Wherigo Geocache
Cartridge
Updated To Version 1.1!! Colorado GPSr Should Work
3/8/2008 - I have
updated the cartridge to version 1.1 with the following changes.
- There is a discrepancy in the way the PPC and the Colorado
determine when they will show a zone in 'Locations'. The PPC does
it one way while the Colorado does it a different way. I have
changed the code to "Force" the zones to show up when they're
supposed to.
- I enlarged the zones slightly to accommodate more GPS
"bounce".
- I added a dialog box to better direct the player to the trail
opening.
Congratulations to g-o-cashers for being FTF in all of New
England!!
What is a Wherigo Geocache?
Wherigo is a new way of utilizing GPS technology to play games,
take tours, and yes geocache. Visit Wherigo.com to learn
more about this new software.
Do I need special equipment? (I'm willing to help. See below)
Yes! To find this cache the proper way and to truly experience the
hunt the way it was meant to be experienced, you will need two
things:
- The Wherigo Player
- The "Millis Marble Madness" Wherigo Cartridge
|
The Wherigo Player comes pre installed on the
Garmin Colorado series GPSr. A version of the player is available
for download for use by GPS enabled Pocket PC devices. Click
"Download Player" to get the PPC version.
Once you have the Player ready to go, you will need
to download the cartridge for this cache. Click "Download
Cartridge" to get it.

The Setting:
This Wherigo Geocache takes place at Oak Grove Farm in Millis, MA.
This area used to be the home of Lansing Millis of whom the town is
named after. This area is now owned by the town of Millis and
accessible to the public. It offers a couple of youth soccer
fields, youth baseball/softball fields, a newly renovated
playground, as well as some short walking trails through woods and
open fields.
The posted coordinates are for a parking lot which offers
parking for probably a dozen or so cars and is also where your
Wherigo journey will begin.
The Experience:
This Wherigo experience is pretty straight forward and should be
completed with relative ease. It was designed to demonstrate some
of the basic functionality of Wherigo and how it can be used for
geocaching. What I'm doing with this little game is just the tip of
the ice burg; the possibilities are amazing. I would love to hear
about your experience with this cache.
Your first task is to visit three areas near the playground
where you will be asked to provide some information about what you
see in the real world. Each area will reward you with a single
colored (virtual) marble. Once you've collected all three marbles,
we'll head into the woods to play a little game (Think Mastermind). Once you've successfully completed the
game; you will be led to a final "Zone" where you will receive info
on the cache location. I would suggest
not going off trail until after you've entered this final zone and
you're instructed to do so. With the exception of the last
25' the entire experience is on open trails and fields (During the
summer, expect some overgrowth during the last 25'). The cache is a
6.8 cup Lock & Lock covered with camo tape.
Is logging my result any different for this
cache?
Logging your results here on geocaching.com is no different than
any other cache; so no changes there.
Unlocking the cartridge on Whereigo.com is not required, but it
would be greatly appreciated. After you've completed the cartridge
you should see a "Millis Marble Madness.gws" file on your device.
You can upload this file to Wherigo.com and it will "Unlock" it,
giving you full credit for completing the cartridge. It will also
help track the number of completions for this cartridge. Again not
required, but I would really appreciate it if you did.
Don't have the hardware, but still want to experience
this?
In the interest of promoting this new cache type I will try to make
myself (and my Pocket PC) as available as possible to anyone or any
group that would like to experience what this is like. Contact me
through my profile and we can try to setup a meeting time and we
can run through this thing together and you can get a cool new
found icon in your profile.
Feedback is a good thing!
Because this is so new I would greatly appreciate any feedback you
can offer (good or bad). Your feedback will help me determine
whether or not I should continue to pursue creating more of these
types of caches.
