[Wind Lion God in
Kinmen]
To resist the strong monsoon wind to ruin crops and avert the
disease as well as the evilness, people in Kinmen invoked Wind Lion
God (FengShiYe, also called Stone Lion God) to guard their village
and protect them from the evil spirits because they believed the
stone lion has the magical power to protect them and bring them
good fortune.
In Kinmen, Wind Lion Gods are not only the guardians of villages
and people but also art of culture. There are about 100 Wind Lion
Gods shielding villages and houses on Kinmen island. Each Wind Lion
God has unique extreme facial expressions. The variations of their
expressions can range from ferocious type to joyful one. The size
of Wind Lion Gods are also diverse, they can be large to 4m in
height or short to 30cm.
Besides, according to their different functions, some Wind Lion
Gods stand at the outer of a village, but some stand at the corner
of an alley in the village, or on the wall of an old house. The
alleys in the village are complex. Sometimes you can only find them
with your fortune, even someone tell you where them are.
