Geocache Description:

A cache on the ‘Back Table’ of Table Mountain, where an old Cableway was erected to transport building material and manpower to the top of the Mountain for the construction of five dams.

History:
The dams, constructed between 1887 and 1907, were (and still is) used to supply Cape Town with fresh water. In order to transport building material and workers to the top, a cableway was constructed. The remains of the base/foundation of the upper cableway station can still be seen today at the cache location.

For more information with regards to the cableway and the construction of the dams, visit the Waterworks museum at S33 58.491 E18 24.454. The museum is open seven days a week during summer and on weekends only during the winter months (May to October). Closed any time during bad weather.

Safety:
Be advised that the weather on top of Table Mountain can change very quickly. Pack enough warm clothes and food. Don’t forget the sunblock!

The Container:
A camouflaged Lock-n-Lock container. Original cache contents consists of the usual – A logbook and pen, “Readme” note, an assortment of plastic insects and other creatures.
