This cache has been set for the Lang Spoon cache bash and is not loggable until Friday 11th April 2008.
RAITH ESTATE
Raith Estate has been owned by the fergusons of raith since the death of the first earl of melvillein the early 18th century.
The first william ferguson of raith married around 1730 to Jane Crauford daughter of Ronald Crauford of restalrig(near Edinburgh) her sister was the Countess of Dalkeith
their son Robert Cauford Ferguson was M.P.for Kirkcaldy from 1767-1840 and died in london age 73. Robert Crauford Fergusons oldest son was general Sir John Ferguson of Nottingham who died without having an heir. His brother Sir Ronald Ferguson was the next heir of Raith, who was born in Raith house in 1773 and died in 1840 age 68. He married Jane the daughter of SIR Hector Munro of Novar Ross-shire who died in 1830 The name Munro-Ferguson has continued to this day, although there have had to be some name adoptions for purposes of inheritence.
Col. Robert Munro Ferguson (1802-68)79th Highlanders, inherited both the Raith and Novar estates in 1841.
An altar-tomb was erected to Munro Ferguson on Castle Hill, a 'picturesque spot within the grounds of Raith' in memory of all the men he commanded during battle.
At the cache site you will see the alter and another monument set in the ground.
The co-ords were a bit off due to tree cover but when you are at the top the cache is about 20 feet west of the alter at the start of an obvious path.
The path mentioned above leads to the cliff edge and no access down can be gained - watch children please, however, the views from the end of this path of Raith Lake are fantastic.
HOW TO DO THE CACHE
Park as suggested where you will see the start of the trail beside the walk and cycle sign, through the gap in the fence.
At the trailhead point you need to bear left which is slightly downhill along the back gardens of some houses and will bring you into a clearing with the hill on your left.
If you are going on to do Raith Tower cache wich is not that far away you will need to go back to the trailhead and bear right (uphill). No access can be gained from the lower path to Raith Tower.
