Geocache Description:

Terrific uphill walk through an ancient wood

This cache has been set for the Lang Spoon cache bash and is not loggable until Friday 11th April 2008.

Harran Hill is the site of an ancient and important wood.

The wood lies on a rocky ridge between Loch Ore and Benarty Hill. It is the oldest and most atmospheric woodland in the Regional Park and one of the best bluebell woods in Fife.

The wood has been a plantation since 1936; however, it has a history stretching back hundreds, or even thousands of years. This site may have been wooded since shortly after the last ice age 10,000 years ago. Maps dating back to 1752 show a wood in this area, in almost the exact outline as now.

Other evidence of a long history is found within the wood itself. During May and June you can see a spectacular carpet of bluebells, or wild hyacinth, along with dog’s mercury. These plants are both considered ‘indicators’ that this ground has been woodland for a very long time.

As you walk into the woods please take the trail into the woods and not the ranger track that runs up the side as you will have a more pleasant walk.

The GPS was a bit wonky at the top due to tree cover, but the clue should help.
