I was out looking for a new fishing hole and came across this spot. Of course im the curious type so as soon as i got home i googled "old bridge columbia al"and this is one of the things i came up with! The Red-Eyed Porker, Columbia
In 1893, the Columbia Breeze reported strange happenings in the small Houston County town.
It seemed the spirit of Pleas Kirkland — who died an unexplainable, but tragic, death in the courthouse — was hovering over downtown Columbia. Even weirder was the spirit took the form of a fiery-eyed hog that walked “man-fashion” on two hooves.
The town marshal, a local contractor and the mayor each had a run-in with the pig, according to an article from Nov. 16, 1893. The pig liked to hang around the town’s artesian well and would frighten those in its path with heinous shrieks. Some witnesses said the pig rose straight up out of the ground, while others insisted the spirit pig rode in on moon beams — always on two legs instead of four.
It was believed that Pleas Kirkland left some money buried around town, and it was his spirit watching over the hidden treasure.
When the red-eyed pig came upon a young couple at Omussee Creek, it was believed to have disappeared for good into the water. But it re-appeared near the town’s cotton factory the next night. The young women who worked there began hurrying home after work and never went out alone at night. good luck hunting!
