Geocache Description:

Searchwise015's DIDO caches are literally drive in, drive out. No more than a few steps from your car. They are often in high muggle areas, so stealth is the key. Sign the log book and leave a small swap if you want.

Originally named Bibhoora by the local Aboriginals, The first white discovery of the Barron River was in 1874 by James Venture Mulligan (1837-1907), although he did not name the river at the time.

The river gained its current name in 1875 when two police sub-inspectors, Johnstone and Douglas, named it after T.H. Barron, chief clerk of police in Brisbane.

The Barron's headwaters start in the Crater National Park near Mt Hypipamee at an altitude of 1200 m. Flowing north 65 km across the Atherton Tablelands before finally turning east after Mareeba towards Kuranda. After passing under the Kuranda Range Highway's bridge and through Kuranda proper, it then descends down the 260 metre high Barron Falls and reaches the Cairns floodplains near Smithfield.

In 1935 the waters of the Barron River were harnessed in the Barron Gorge Hydroelectric Power Station to generate Queensland's first hydroelectric power. Two hundred metres from the base of the Barron Falls an underground power station was carved into the cliff face. Water was delivered through pipes to drive the turbines, two 1200kW turbo-alternators. The substation, workshops and staff houses were built around the area now forming the Skyrail station.

The cache is a PVC container painter camo.
