Geocache Description:

The significance of the name is no longer there - but I want to keep the name. Another round trip in a favourite spot which is good for spotting birdlife. I have set a series of caches along the route

This cache site was the clue in a car treasure hunt we did a number of years ago. That was our first visit to this place and we have returned many times since. This cache should be combined with GC1A1TX Edge of Darkness GC1A1V7 On the Edge GC1A1VH Edge of Reason GC1A1VB Water's Edge and could also include a trip to the nearby Waterside GCZHYQ and The Templar’s House GC10H11. This series of caches was prompted by the finding of a commemorative stone – it marked the death of two men, John Fortune and John MacDiarmid on the 15th of December 1883, in the discharge of their duty. This sent me on a quest to find out more. It turned out that John Fortune was a gamekeeper on the local estate and John MacDiarmid was a rabbit trapper he had asked to help him catch poachers and they had both been killed while doing this. I found this out from the following article on the web - "On the 20th of December 1883 an article appeared in our local newspaper. It contained a few lines relating to an incident on the near lands of Lord Rosebery. The headline was in capital letters draped in black print. It read MURDEROUS ATTACK ON GAMEKEEPER. Poaching has been a way of life around this neck of the woods for the lifetime of us all. Miners found a way to challenge and contact nature or to furnish a bite for the table. It was not in common for people to be charged with the crime and suffer its penalties. To those who constantly avoided capture somehow earned a unimportant reputation for skill and stealth. But to kill or injure for game was alien to our very nature and negated any standing in our community." If you would like to read the rest of this report - http://www.timegun.org/Rosebery_Murders.html Waymarks for the best parking spots, a good picnic spot and where it is best to cross the fence are included with GC1A1TX Edge of Darkness. Sorry the cache is a micro and beware the area can be very busy at the weekend with Muggle fishermen and Trolls! There is a good path round the south side, but you need to follow the edge of the field on the north side, boots are recommended. PLEASE ensure you are not overlooked.
