This musical tower was erected by Alfred I. DuPont as a token of love and affection to the memory of his parents, also to lovers of music in believing that great happiness will accrue to all by virtue of its construction.
The Du Pont tower is probably the first private mausoleum in history with a six-passenger elevator, beacon lights and a carillon. Four concrete eagles stare from the tower's four corners, the Du Pont arms in concrete ornament the severe Renaissance façade. RECTITUDINE STO ("By rectitude I stand") is the motto carved above it.
This tower has many memories for us. My son LittleSquirt, who is fine and healthy now, has had numerous surgeries here and recouperated in rooms facing this tower. He and I have spent many nights here and we would make-up stories about this tower. He imagined the eagles on top would come alive, fly into his room and take him away on an adventure. Or he would imagine the tower was full of fire breathing dragons and if he let them free, they would become his pets. His favorite was that we lived in this tower and would be the Rulers Of Wilmington.
