Geocache Description:

A scenic multi in easy terrain, in a very popular recreation and scientific reserve area.

The Waikanae Estuary Scientific Reserve is one of the most valuable bird sanctuaries in the country. It is inhabited and visited by some of the rarest and most endangered birds in this part of the world –some 60 species in all. The Waikanae estuary area is linked by the Kapiti Marine Reserve to Kapiti Island, making the total area a diverse and nationally significant conservation resource. The area is also home to a number of rare plant species, and has a long history of Maori occupation. For more information, try the Department of Conservation website. –there are several others you could track down The local council and a number of local groups do much to preserve and enhance the area as a habitat, and Waimanu Lagoons is an example of a major housing development ensuring that environmental values are allowed for. This multi-cache takes you on a short tour of the area, with the opportunity to watch some of the many species swimming, resting, roosting, maybe hoping you’ll feed them as you pass. Take the time to relax and watch the bird world go by… The published coordinates take you to sit with Sally and take in an information board that lists some of the species in front of you. Waypoint 2: The Old Shag Tree was a roost for at least three species of shag, until it was hit by lightning -they can now be seen further up the lagoon. The container is a small tablet canister. Waypoint 3: Estuary views. The broad expanse of the estuary stretches in front of you, with Kapiti Island in the distance. Depending on the tide, a range of wading birds will be parading in front of you. Final cache site: a more secluded spot, where you can write your comments in the log and swap goodies. Please ensure you disguise it well before you leave. Cache is a 0.5L sistema. On the right tide, the estuary nearby is a good place to observe royal spoonbills feeding. This is a very popular walking and birdwatching area. Be alert for muggles at all waypoints, and please ensure that the final cache is well disguised in its hideyhole!
