Geocache Description:

Part of the Chorley Challenge - a cache in every Chorley village!

Astley Village

Astley Village is situated to the north of Chorley town centre within easy reach of the motorway network at junction 8 of the M61 and not far from the M6 junction 28. Albeit not in Astley Village Parish, but right next door, a must see is Astley Hall dating back to Elizabethan times. Changes and additions over the centuries have helped make a visit to the Hall a fascinating and enjoyable experience.

There's a Woodlands Trust site in the village, and the Westway Ponds Nature Reserve. I haven't been to either yet, but knew of the spot where I was going to hide this cache - a feeder to the River Chor.

River Chor

The River Chor is a largely culverted stream in the Lancashire town of Chorley. Its name was back-formed from "Chorley". The source of the river is in the hills near Heapey.

Subsequently, the young stream flows through Chorley North Industrial Estate, past B&Q and then underground to Astley Park.

The river exits at the Southport Road end of the park, flowing behind Chorley Nissan and through Big Wood at the foot of Stansted Road, before connecting into Bonk Lodge. Posh new waterfall on the outflow of that ressy now.

At the end of the reservoir, the river continues for several hundred metres and flows into the River Yarrow.

This part of the Chor is a minor tributary of no name (as far as I can see). It's on a short series of paths that link into Astley Park. Easy parking to the North on the housing estate.
