Aunt Matilda And Her Pet
Opposum
One of the cool things about visiting my Aunt Matilda was not only
did she live in the mountains and the woods of South Eastern
Oklahoma but all the woodland pets she had. Or shall I say the
forest animals that befriended her. She was always conversing with
nature and with all the animals, from the birds to the coyotes to
the bears and she even later learned to live with those crazy
Russian trained racoons. But I will never forget the pet oppossum
she had. Aunt Matilda found him one night on her back porch trying
to get in some glass jars filled with fruit and rum she had left
out to ferment ( that was the way she made some of her special
medicine she said and not for us to touch it...ever...if we knew
what was good for us). He was just a baby and she figured the
mother abandon him. He did seem to be a likable fella even though
he was acting crazy such as when he was hanging in trees, he would
try to swat at invisible creatures. His right front leg was stunted
and weaker than the other so he always had it tucked up to his
chest and walked on three legs. When she saw that she decided to
name him Napolean after the little French madman who always had a
hand in his coat and was always trying to take over the world.
Now as Napolean grew up, he seemed to think that he was a big part
of the family, it would always be entertaining when we would be
down on visits to see my Aunt. We think he thought that he was part
dog, part racoon and all parts HUMAN. One of the funniest things I
remembered was he was learning to walk on his hind legs and when we
were outside playing in the garden and planting seeds, he would try
to walk like us. It was hiliraous. On the one edge of the garden
was a trail that led deep into the thick forest and down some steep
ravines and all, past where Aunt Matilda grew her own tobacco and
her special medicinal mushrooms. Well I started chasing my brother
down the trail after he binged my head with a thrown carrot and
good old Napolean knew a chase was on. He bolted after us as we got
to the steep part (which we called the nature trail from Hell) and
as I slowed down, poor Napolean couldn't and tripped me up. I fell
forward with Napolean trapped in and around my legs as he was
clingy for dear life. I fell into my brother with a heavy thud and
all three of us went tumbling down the trail out of control,
hitting every tree, rock and brush on the way down. By the time we
got stopped at the bottom, I was on top of my brother and Napolean
was on top of me. We all just kinda layed there till we got our
senses and breath back. Oh yeah we must have been a sight for
anyone who saw us. Yes, that was just one adventure we had back
then with him!
This cache is dedicated to my Aunt Matilda and her fun loving but
crazy oppussum Napolean and the times I spent with her back in my
youth. You are looking for a 30 caliber ammo can that has been
painted up in a Darkmoon Stealth Paintjob, filled with the swag of
a hundred trips to my very own never never land and hidden out here
in the woods. Well, there sort of woods, there are some thorns
mixed in with the trees and probably some icky spiders and
centipedes running around. Just icky I say. I am talking about
Tyger eating spiders, they were that big I tell you. Huge.
Gigantic. Enormous. They need to be on Jenny Craig big. There could
even be Poison Ivy as that stuff grows wild everywhere. Man there
could even be Henry, the friendly neighborhood vagrant, around but
he won't bother you to much. He does like living with the King and
loves the fries from Burger King so do not bring him McDonalds. I
do hope you enjoy the hunt and the stories and as always, remember
to have fun out there. A smile doesn't cost a thing! But a trip to
the emergency room does!!!
