This cache is part of a series of caches placed by New Mexico
Geocachers in a cooperative effort with New Mexico State Parks
(NMSP) to celebrate New Mexico State Parks 75th Anniversary. A
cache has been placed in each of the 34 state parks around New
Mexico.
Elephant Butte Lake - New Mexico’s largest and most
visited state park. “The Butte” is a favorite among
boaters, anglers, bird watchers, campers and hikers, offering an
assortment of beach and water activities, including boat and
personal watercraft rentals. The South Monticello Point area offers
a more laid-back, quiet camping away from the central
activities.
Be sure to check the following points of interest while you are
there.
* The name “Elephant Butte” was derived from the
eroded core of an ancient volcano, shaped like an elephant, now an
island that rises from the lake.
* Dam Site Recreation Area was once home to the construction
crews that built Elephant Butte Dam and later for the Civilian
Conservation Corps (CCC).
* Paseo Del Rio Recreation Area formerly served as a fish
hatchery constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and
operated until 1965.
Since this cache is located within the State Park system, a Day Use
or Annual Pass, which can be obtained from any State Park, will be
required.
If you see any of the Park's staff while you are there, be sure
to let them know you are a Geocacher.
Placed with permission.
