Geocache Description:

Raven Rock State Park is located in Harnett County, NC and opens daily at 8:00 am. The park is home to the Fall Zone, a boundary between the piedmont and coastal plain regions.

The Fall Zone is a boundary between the piedmont region and the coastal plain region of the Carolinas. The Fall Zone (sometimes referred to as the Fall Line) actually extends from Alabama north to New York and is where the harder metamorphic rock of the piedmont region meets up with softer sedimentary rock of the coastal plains. The coastal plain is typically flat with gently rolling hills and valleys. The piedmont, on the other hand, typically consists of gently rolling, rounded hills and long low ridges. Elevations can be up to about 600 ft in the coastal plain of North Carolina in the Sandhills area. The piedmont will typically range from 300 to 600 ft in elevation.

The Fall Zone is often characterized by a relatively sudden drop in elevation as the piedmont region transforms into the coastal plain. It is often evidenced by low east facing cliffs or noticeable rapids or falls in a river if one is in the area. The Fall Zone passes through Raven Rock State Park and the coordinates above will take you to its approximate location in the park. Once there, you need to make some observations about the fall zone and email the answers.

To claim this find, you must email your answers when you post your log. Please do not post your answers in your log. As with any outdoor activity, practice Leave No Trace ethics and be sure to follow all park rules.

To Claim:
