Geocache Description:

"You Run, that's not fair, you was to Walk." That is how someone remembered an Indian's objection to the "Walking Purchase" of September 19, 1737, probably the most well known of Pennsylvania's Indian purchases from the Lenape Indians. The purchase was based on a very questionable treaty of 1686. Two of the three ‘walkers’ dropped out but Edward Marshall pressed on and after covering about sixty-five cross-country miles in eighteen hours, collapsed at a point near Mauch Chunk, now known as Jim Thorpe. The Indians did not know that the Provincial Secretary of Pennsylvania, James Logan, would have a trail prepared and fit runners do the ‘walk’. This accomplishment yielded a return of 1,200,000 acres from the Lenape’s as the purchase included all land at a right angle between the path of the walk and the Delaware River. This was an area about the size of Rhode Island. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walking_Purchase for a map and description of the trek. Lenape Chief Lappawinsoe complained that “[the white runners] should have walkt along by the River Delaware or the next Indian path to it . . . should have walkt for a few Miles and then have sat down and smoakt a Pipe, and now and then have shot a Squirrel, and not have kept up the Run, Run all day.” This cache is at the monument that marks the starting point of that 1737 Walking Purchase in Wrightstown. It is near the Friend's Meeting House where a large chestnut tree stood (long gone) that was the location of the start of the 'walk'. Some of you have probably driven by the spot many times without realizing it. The cache is a micro with a log. Bring a pencil!

PLEASE DO FUTURE FINDER A FAV AND DON'T BURY COMPLETELY IN THE PINE NEEDLES.
