West Allis History 2 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Wis Kid: I noticed that this cache has remained temporarily disabled for a period of time well in excess of the period of a few weeks as contemplated by the cache guidelines published on Geocaching.com. For now, I'm temporarily archiving this to keep it from continually showing up in search lists. Just contact me at the below e-mail address when you have the cache repaired, and assuming it still meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

If you haven?t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past.

Thanks for your understanding,

Geocache Description:

Fairly easy cache located near West Allis Fire Station #1 and Public Library.

35mm film canister with only the log sheet. Please leave your name and date on the log. There is a pencil in the cache but I can not say how long it will be sharp.

Please return it exactly the way you found it.

Thank you and happy hunting.

Important:

Park away from fire station (south side of road)- which is also closer to cache. This is located near a busy street so park safely and be aware of muggles.

Brief History From City Web Site-

In 1925, the West Allis Fire Department became completely full-time. "Firemen" were required to work three 24-hour shifts to receive one full day off. They could not leave the city without permission from the Chief, and only a limited number were given that privilege. The department occupied a single station at the intersection of S. 73rd Street and W. National Avenue. By this time, the department no longer relied upon local horses, but maintained five various types of fire apparatus, two of which had inflatable tires.

The department moved one block to the west in 1930, to make way for the construction of a new police department headquarters. In 1998, the police moved to a new station on the city’s west end, but Engine 1 and Med 1 continue to provide service from the fire department’s former headquarters.
