To reach the cache, cross either of the lock gates (best to
choose one that is closed
). Follow the path directly oppposite the
gate and then cross both weirs. It's quite OK to do this, the
island is a popular spot for dog walking muggles.
Provided you can lift a push-chair onto the lock gate (a few
inches off the ground) you can take it most of the way to the
cache, but the last couple of dozen yards are too overgrown. As
with all caches by the river, you should take particular care with
small children, but crossing the river by lock gate and weir is not
significantly different to walking along the towpath as all the
crossings are well protected to stop you falling in.
You should not take bicycles onto the island, they can be
chained up on the towpath side.
You're looking for a cache that is on the large side for small
but a bit on the small side for regular. The area gets very
overgrown in summer and the cache can be difficult even with the
clue. I have added a spoiler photo, but you have to be in roughly
the right place for that to be of any help.
You should find that access to the cache is easier from the
central footpath, the perimiter path gets you close to the cache,
but the wrong side of heavy vegetation.
On a maintenance visit my GPSr reported an error of 45-50 feet.
I think it's likely that the original co-ordinates are the more
accurate, but if you have trouble finding it try N51 24.671 W000
30.077 .
Handicache rating H42142. Much of route to the cache is on a
hard surface, but you have to cross the lock gates and 2 weirs and
the final approach is in thick vegetation.
