Part of a riverside exploration through Central Lancashire. This one in particular will be muddy in wet weather. This is a difficult path to walk and I would advise boots even in dry spells.
A bit more difficult to get to than most of the others. Approachable only from the North, you will pass No 17 on the way to it. At the time the cache was placed, earthworks were starting nearby for the construction of a gigantic waste compaction and processing plant, on the site of a former Leyland Vehicles test track. Even so, there is a very tranquil pond next to the cache with swans, ducks, coots, moorhens etc. still quietly going about their business.
The riverside path from No 17 to No 16 is quite challenging - over and under fallen trees, boggy stretches, nettles in Summer, etc. You can avoid this, but it isn't as much fun. 35metres North of No 17 cache, a path leads to the top of the embankment, then crosses open ground in the general direction of No 16 cache, descending to the pond, then round the pond to GZ. In Spring, two resident swans may be nesting, so please try not to disturb them. We hope they don't disturb you!
It isn't an official public right of way, but it's in frequent use by dog walkers and others.
If you approach from #17 Old Pump House, when you are close to the pond you should see a yellow triangular "Danger Deep Water" sign on your left. This one in particular will be muddy in wet weather. This is a difficult path to walk and I would advise boots even in dry spells.
