Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series of caches placed by New Mexico Geocachers in a cooperative effort with New Mexico State Parks (NMSP) to celebrate New Mexico State Parks 75th Anniversary. A cache has been placed in each of the 34 state parks around New Mexico.

The Caballo Mountains serve as a backdrop to the lake, which boasts a full array of water sports, winter waterfowl watching and cactus gardens. The RV Rally site has a pavilion which seats 200 people and will accommodate large groups for all occasions.

Be sure to check the following points of interest while you are there.

* Caballo Dam is an earth-filled structure constructed between 1936 and 1938 to capture water released upstream from Elephant Butte Dam, which can then be later used to irrigate local crops.

* Gazing up at the majestic Caballo Mountains, east of the park, a close examination will reveal Bat Cave Canyon, ¾ of the way up the mountain in the bluffs and visible from anywhere on Caballo Lake.

* The 7.5-mile Horse Trail runs from the town of Williamsburg south to Caballo Lake State Park, providing riders excellent views of the Rio Grande and the Caballo Mountains.

To reach the cache you will need to go on a road that has a gate with a sign that states: "Closed October to March." Should the gate be closed, vehicles should park in the adjacent parking lot and management states it is OK to continue on foot. Further on, you will come upon a warning sign hanging on a chain that states: "Do Not Enter" and it is also OK to continue on to the cache on foot from this point, but again vehicles are not allowed.

When you are in the cache area you will see a Wind-Warning Light, which is one of three in the park. The stronger the wind, the faster the light flashes – this warning is used to alert those on the lake of the wind conditions.

Since this cache is located within the State Park system, a Day Use or Annual Pass, which can be obtained from any State Park, will be required.

If you see any of the Park's staff while you are there, be sure to let them know you are a Geocacher.
