This cache is part of a series of caches placed by New Mexico
Geocachers in a cooperative effort with New Mexico State Parks
(NMSP) to celebrate New Mexico State Parks 75th Anniversary. A
cache has been placed in each of the 34 state parks around New
Mexico.
Situated among rolling grasslands near the historic Santa Fe
Trail, the park features an astronomy observatory and one of the
most extensive dinosaur trackways in North America. The 170
surface-acre lake is a winter resting area for waterfowl, when bird
watching is superb. Boating and fishing allowed March-October.
Be sure to check the following points of interest while you are
there.
* The dinosaur track way at Clayton Lake State Park is
considered one of the finest in the world, featuring over 500
tracks, and including a number of “tail drags” – a very rare
sight.
* The Visitor Center is the first straw bale building in New
Mexico State Parks. Virtually every material used in the
construction of this building is a renewable or recycled item. Even
the roof shingles (which look like slate) are 100% recycled rubber
and plastic.
* The observatory is one of two in NM State Parks. This “roll
off” style structure features a 12” Meade telescope. Star parties
are held on a regular basis, or by request for groups.
Since this cache is located within the State Park system, a Day
Use or Annual Pass, which can be obtained from any State Park, will
be required.
If you see any of the Park's staff while you are there, be sure
to let them know you are a Geocacher.
Placed with permission.
