This cache is part of a series of caches placed by New Mexico
Geocachers in a cooperative effort with New Mexico State Parks
(NMSP) to celebrate New Mexico State Parks 75th Anniversary. A
cache has been placed in each of the 34 state parks around New
Mexico.
Nestled on the rugged western slope of the Little Florida
Mountains, the park is abundant in jasper, quartz, perlite, and
rhyolite. A modern visitor center has fascinating geologic and
historic displays. Spring Canyon day-use area is located less than
2 miles away.
Be sure to check the following points of interest while you are
there.
* Spring Canyon, located 2 miles southwest of Rockhound in the
rugged Big Florida Mountains, has covered picnic sites and hiking
trails that provide access to spectacular wildflower displays in
spring, cool autumn weather, and scenic views year-round.
* The scenic Thunder Egg Trail provides access to rock
collecting areas and scenic views.
* The architecture of Rockhound State Park’s visitor center is
built in a southern New Mexico hacienda style building that
contains displays of early settlers, geological, the Desert Grocery
Store, Apache Indians and Buffalo Soldiers.
Since this cache is located within the State Park system, a Day
Use or Annual Pass, which can be obtained from any State Park, will
be required.
If you see any of the Park's staff while you are there, be sure
to let them know you are a Geocacher.
Placed with permission.
