Geocache Description:

A 2 stage cache, taking you to a little of East Greenwich's past which is often overlooked.

The first cache site mark’s the new home for a 72 foot long ceramic mural, originally constructed in 1972 on the Woolwich Road frontage of Greenwich District Hospital (now demolished) and moved to this new site in 2006. The mural was designed and placed on the hospital by Philippa Threfall and Kennedy Collins, and is made from hundreds of ceramic pieces and stones collected from the West Country, Surrey, Wales & Scotland. The 4 scenes are all connected with Greenwich and the local river. The mural story begins in the 18th Century when the Royal Naval College was built, and courtiers stand here in front of a state barge. Next is the age of sail – a midshipman in full dress uniform overseas the loading by a mariner against a background of rigging and a small ketch in full sail. The 3rd mural depicts a Victorian steamer, with a mother and children waving to the trippers from the banks of the river. The final scene shows a naval rating and a docker with a tug and barge.

The cache itself is a small waterproof Tupperware box, with log book & pencil. There is room for small TB's and swaps. In the cache you will of course find the co-ordinates and a clue for stage 2.

The 2nd, slightly larger cache is sited in East Greenwich Pleasuance. A public park in East Greenwich, near to Westcombe Park Railway Station, and a waypoint is shown for the entrance to the park.

The Park originally opened in 1857 as the graveyard for Greenwich Hospital, and when the railway tunnel nearby was constructed in 1875 a further 3000 sailors were re-interred in the Pleasuance from the hospital site.

Now owned by Greenwich Council, the park has a small childrens play area, and a kids club (the one o'clock club), and is a great little oasis of green parkland often missed in East Greenwich.

The cache is a small Tupperware box with room for small TB's and swaps.

The park does close up at dusk (sometimes earlier), so this cache can only be retrieved during the day, and obviously only with the co-ordinates from stage 1 nearby.
