This is a regular sized cache, located near McDonald Pass, west of Helena.
The cache is close to the Continental Divide Trail along one of the ski trails on the McDonald Pass Cross Country Ski Trail system. The cache location provides spectacular views of the Helena Valley, Elkhorn Mountains and McDonald Pass.
Like the Way Up cache I placed on Mt. Helena, this cache reflects some of the features that I have come to like best about geocaching. The double standard comes from the fact that there are different rules for using the ski trails in the winter and the hiking trails in the summer.
Parking Directions. During the winter season, park at the trailhead near Frontier Town 46.34.005 N, 112.18.415 W. In the summer, you can park at the Frontier Town trailhead, or park at the Microwave Road trailhead located near the Montana Highway Department buildings, about ¼ mile east of the Frontier Town turn off.
Exercise. This cache is about a 30 minute one-way ski (winter) or 40 minute hike (summer) along the Old Cabin Loop trail. Note that walking and snowshoes are not allowed on the cross country ski trails during the winter season, so the only way to get to the cache in the winter is on skis.
A place to walk the dog. In the summer this is a great place to take the dog for a run. Dogs are not allowed on the cross country ski trails during the winter season.
Open Space and Views. This location has it all!
Large cache size: It is nice to have a cache large enough to leave a log book and pencil, trade items and travel bugs.
Original cache contents include several toy soldiers, a kaleidoscope, belt buckle, and small toy car. There is a Sacajawea one dollar coin for the first to find.
The GPS accuracy was not too good the day we placed this cache. Please send me a message or note in your log how close the coordinates got you to the cache. Good luck.
