Geocache Description:

For all of you who did Ancient of Days, here is a way to earn another smiley.  I decided to turn it into a simple multi, simply because there was not any place nearby that was appropriate for a cache and because the tree is so cache worthy!

Coordinates are for parking and gathering data for input for the final.

This namesake of Oak Harbor was recently spared in 2004. Estimated at over 300 years of age, it makes it one of the oldest of its kind in the state. The massive Garry oak tree was scheduled to be cut down and its trunk carved into a piece of public art. The tree is suffering from a fungal decay in the roots that makes it a potential safety hazard. Oak Harbor City Council members gave the post office oak tree a stay of execution. In response, a planned memorial service for the tree turned into a celebration.

The Garry Oak grows along the Pacific Coast from California to British Columbia and is a familiar sight to Snohomish County residents. Currently, legislators are trying to make the Garry Oak the official oak tree of Washington State. It has little competition! It's the only oak tree native to Washington. If passed, Garry Oaks could then be a source of pride for the whole state.

Northwest of the "Senior Citizen" you will see a large off-white sign that ends in 5 digits. Using just the last three digits subtract 177. Add this new number to the parking latitude coordinates to arrive at the final latitude coordinates.

Also near the tree you will find a yellow fire hydrant , identified by "M18 SE #? ??" Identify the three numbers and subtract 46. Then subtract this new number (putting a decimal point in front of it ) from the parking longitude to arrive at the final's longitude coordinates.
