Geocache Description:

Very short walk from road. Historic Monument near the river.

Welcome to "Hero of the South Platte"

This is the location of a train accident that happened on August 28th, 1898. There are a few different accounts of what happened, but all have a common conclusion; that Billy Westall, the Engineer of Denver South Park & Pacific Engine 195 died a Hero.
He was piloting a train headed for Dome Rock. Whether he was dropping off or picking up a group of people picknicking and fishing, is still confused. But all agree that his train did have cars containing passengers. As he approached Dome Rock, there was a rock slide accross the tracks. Billy stayed with his engine and gave his all to get it stopped before hitting the slide.
The train did hit hit the rock slide, but at a slow speed. Only the engine derailed and over turned. Not one person in the passenger cars was injured. Had he not gotten the train to the slow speed he did, it would have been a disaster.
Another train from Leadville came to his rescue. Billy was brought to Buffalo (now Buffalo Creek)and placed in the baggage car that was behind the depot, for transport to medical aid. He died at 4 in the morning . He did voice his last wishes, which are inscripted on the monument.

"Tell my wife I died Thinking of her"

Train passenger donations and the Railroad company funded the placing of the monument.
Billy is buried in Riverside Cemetary in Denver.
