Geocache Description:

The Beverly Hillbillies is an American comedy television series about a nouveau riche family of hillbillies who move to Beverly Hills. Due to oil being discovered on their land they are now very wealthy. However, they refuse to conform to society. Instead, they wind up shaking up the privileged society in Beverly Hills. Hilarity ensues in the 274 episodes that ran from 1962 - 1971.

Well, we don't have a Clampett family living here in Pescadero Creek County Park; however we do have our own real live tar seeping out of the ground (which is how Tarwater Creek got its name).

To bring people to this neat place I have placed an ammo box along the Tarwater Trail Loop, very near where it joins Tarwater Creek and Canyon Trail. There is a layer (sometimes very thick) of tar floating in the pools of water. From what I read, the slower the water flow in the creek, the thicker the tar. If you look carefully along the creek (from the trail) you can even see where it is seeping out of the creek banks. While you are here, take a good whiff; the smell of petroleum is unmistakeable.

I first got the idea for this cache from talking to steamloco, who then showed me this place so that I could hide a cache here. He half joked that, with the price of crude oil now exceeding $100 per barrel, talk may start up about drilling for oil out here.

The easiest way to reach this cache is from the entrance located just off Alpine Road. Turn off Alpine Road at N37 17.227 W122 13.102. The parking lot will be on your left at N37 16.568 W122 13.457. To get to the correct end of the Tarwater Loop you will need to cross the paved street (head just a tiny ways back the way you drove in) and enter the trailhead on your left. Parking is free. The park opens daily at 8:00 a.m., the closing time varies, depending on the time of year. Please only cache during park hours. Closing time as well as other park information (including trail maps) can be found at:
