Geocache Description:

Mendon Ponds Glacial Geology

This cache is the first in a series of educational GeoCaches that have been placed in the Rochester area for Earth Science students at Dake Junior High and Irondequoit High School. Each cache contains information about local geology and/or natural history and a learning activity. ALTHOUGH THESE CACHES ARE PLACED FOR STUDENT USE, ALL GEOCACHERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO JOIN IN ON THE FUN! There are no items placed in the cache for trade, small trackable items are welcome.

This cache will acquaint visitors to Mendon Ponds Park with the remarkable deposits left by the retreating Wisconsinan Ice sheet that left its mark on the Rochester area at the end of the Pleistocene Epoch. Inside the cache you will find a brochure that describes the formation of the spectacular kames, kettles, and eskers that contribute to the rugged topography of the park. As you complete the learning activity, you will make connections between the landscape features you see and some of the essential concepts you have studied in Earth Science this year. Enjoy your walk down into the "Devil's Bathtub" and along the "West Esker". This walking tour is best enjoyed during the fall and spring, when the leaves do not block your view of the landscape features.

Tread Lightly!
