WATCH FOR DEER!
As written in "A Season or So...A History of the People of
Bjorkdale and Surrounding Areas" ISBN: 0-919673-38-4, Charles
Bjork was a rugged sailor from Worberg, Sweden. He and three other
Swedish sailors decided to jump ship at Seattle, Washington and
head up to the Klondike and the Gold Rush in 1898. After the gold
rush ended, Charles moved to the Northwest Territories and worked
in construction on the Swan River-Prince Albert Branch of the
Canadian Northern Railway.
One day he decided to explore the newly-cut range lines between
ranges 11 and 12. In doing so he discovered the valley which was to
become the heart of the Bjorkdale settlement. He was so attracted
by the water and grasslands of the valley that he decided to build
a log home in 1904 and apply for a patent. In the years to follow,
more settlers working for the Railroad settled in the area.
The Bjorkdale area has a very interesting geological makeup as it's
located in the area where ancient Lake Agassiz once stood. Nearby
Bjork Lake and Barrier Lake are renmants of ancient Lake
Agassiz.
This area has many eskers, moraines, strandlines and beaches, plus
traces of early man have been found that date back 8,000 years ago!
