This small wooded area located in Wyoming was graciously donated to the City of Wyoming by the descendants of George Stearns. Mr.Stearn was founder of the Stearns & Foster mattress company. Directly next to you is their historic home. If you look closely you can even see their own personal fire hydrant in the woods. Mr. Stearn's used to walk to his Stearn's and Foster Mattress factory just a few short miles east of here in the Village of Lockland. The Stearns family was a very influential to the City of Wyoming. He served on numerous boards and commissions and helped with Wyoming's first church, library and high school. George S. Stearns and Seth Cutter Foster met while working in Cincinnati, Ohio. The two shared a common interest in cotton goods – Stearns had been experimenting with cotton materials while Foster had been selling cotton goods. Together they developed a more durable cotton batting for their wives’ quilting, which was later found to be ideal for mattresses. With Stearns’s engineering skills and Foster’s sales experience, the partners opened their own small factory. The young company began by making cotton felt for mattresses and other products, eventually developing their own line of mattresses. And so, the Stearns & Foster tradition of beauty and fine craftsmanship began. They were one of the first companies to volunteer to the Worker's Compensation Act and provided free life insurance to their workers. During World War II they devoted 80% of their resources to the war effort. In the late 1990's the company was sold off and moved to Mason, Ohio. In May of 2004 a massive fire erupted in the old 15 acre site. Over 130 firefighters from at least 27 departments battled the blaze for over 24 hours. At one time Staerns & Fosters used more cotton than anyone in the world. This dust plus huge holes cut in the floor to remove machinery contributed to the massive blaze.
