A Challenging hike to a great view of Nitro. I use to hike this area back in my childhood, before the 4-Wheeler trails were established.
Park at N 38' 24.380 W 081' 50.524 (Elevation 608 ft). Walk past gate and follow trail uphill. Stay to the right at the first minor fork in the trail on your way to the first waypoint. Stay on main trail till trail forks at N 38' 24.299 W 081'50.376. Take the left fork of trail uphill. Stay on trail till trail forks at N 38' 24.266 W 081 50.312. Take Right fork of trail. Continue to follow trail till it comes to a crossroad at N 38' 24.218 W 081' 50.153. Take path to the left. Stay on the trail and avoid the urge to bushwack...you will thank me later...trail will come to another crossroad. Take the trail to the right, uphill. You should see a grave headstone at N 38' 24.329 W 081 50.297 to verify that your on the right course. Follow trail uphill to Elephant Rock, located at N 38' 24.308 w 081' 50.264. Enjoy the view of Nitro at an Elevation of 1,033 ft. Follow GPSr to the Cache, which is located among some of Nitro's oldest residents.
