Geocache Description:

Thanks for visiting another one of our highway 84 caches. You are looking for a camo wrapped peanut butter jar. This is West Texas so watch for snakes and creepy crawlies.

Hermleigh was surveyed in 1907 on land donated by R. C. Herm and Harry W. Harlin, and the nearby community of Wheat moved to the new site when the Roscoe, Snyder and Pacific Railway built through in 1907-08. Formerly the post office (and a gin and two groceries) were the nucleus of a town named Wheat. It was a good no-nonsense name, but when Wheat moved - it was on land owned by R.C. Herm and Harry Harlin. They combined their names to form Hermlin, but it was disapproved by the postal authorities for fear it could easily be confused with Hamlin. During the First World War, the town was named after French Field Marshall Foch, but after thinking about it for a few years, the townsfolk went back to Hermleigh. The Santa Fe Railroad came to town in 1911. This cache is named for the local school mascot, The Cardinal.
