Geocache Description:

Stiftskaserne

(These towers are examples of the 3nd Generation of FLAK Tower design)

The G-Tower is located within a military base of the Austrian Army
(Naturally, it is not publically accessible... but the coordinates are given so you can try to spot it from a distance...)

The L-Tower (in Esterhazypark) is used as an aquarium (the "Haus des Meeres") and has a climbing wall on the outside.

TRIVIA: A less obvious remnant of the war which remains to this day, can be found at the base of the L tower. It is a former air-raid shelter that now contains the Museum of Medieval Legal History and the History of Torture (Museum für Mittelalterliche Rechtsgeschichte: Die Geschichte der Folter).

Flak towers (German: Flaktürme) were large anti-aircraft gun blockhouses used by the Luftwaffe to prevent overflights of key areas in certain cities in World War II.

They also served as air-raid shelters for tens of thousands of people and to coordinate air defence. With concrete walls up to 3.5 metres thick, these towers were considered to be invulnerable to attack with the usual ordnance carried by Allied bombers of the time-period. Aircraft generally appeared to have avoided the flak towers.

Each Flak tower complex consisted of:

and an L-Tower (Fire Control Tower)

Six of the most intact examples remaining in the world, are standing in Vienna, huge remnants of the Second World War, that are often overlooked, or unseen by the people living there...

The Vienna FLAK series of Caches lets you rediscover these huge stuctures within the living city...

From the Cache, only the L Tower (Known to the locals as "Haus des Meeres") can be seen, which has been converted into an aquarium, with a climbing wall, and huge glass windows in the side...

Since this is a highly public area, please use Ninja-like stealth so that the cache does not get muggle-napped!

Cache container is a 35mm Film canister - please bring your own pen...
