Whirlybird Hayfield Traditional Cache
flyfisher: I am archiving all my Government Canyon caches. I just can't maintain them from afar and have not been making enough regular trips to the canyon to keep them in good shape. Many thanks to all who visited and to the park for letting me place the caches. This should open some nice places for others to place caches in this beautiful park.

This cache is in the Government Canyon State Natural Area. There is an admission charge to Texas State Parks and natural areas. Government canyon is presently open from 8 AM to 6 PM Friday through Monday only. The cache has been approved by park staff. You do not need to leave the trail system to find this cache.
The central path through Government Canyon is the Joe Johnson trail. This cache is a few yards off that trail on a side trail. The Joe Johnson trail is part of a 19th century road that made its way from San Antonio to Camp Verde. Much of the Joe Johnson route is now replaced by Bandera Road which is State Route 16. However, this portion of the trail is in the wilds of an 8000+ acre natural area.
The cache is about 1-1/2 miles up the Joe Johnson route from the backcountry trail head. It is on the short trail to the Hoffman Hayfield, a rescue point in which helicopters can land to remove injured hikers.
Please stay on the trail system. You may need to be discreet when retrieving the cache if the trails are busy on a pretty weekend. What you are looking for is a waterproof match container containing only a log. Bring your own pencil. There is no room for goodies in the cache.
The point of this cache is not difficulty, it is having fun on a nice hike through the woods. Other caches may be present along other trails and near the parking lots of Government Canyon.
