Geocache Description:

A mountain-side cache, with impressive views. It can be reached largely on forest tracks, which although steep, provide relatively easy walking, but the last two hundred metres or so is on a rough and rocky path. It can get very cold, wet and windy up here, so please have appropriate clothing with you, and wear sturdy footwear to avoid slips and falls.

There are many "dodds" in the Lake District, most of them considerably bigger than the "Dodd" that rises to the east of Bassenthwaite Lake, a little sentinel of the much grander slopes of Ullock Pike, the rocky ridge which leads to Carl Side and thence to Skiddaw.

However, I have a soft spot for the simple "Dodd", 1647ft, because it was one of the first mountains that my children toddled up on their own two feet. Yes, they had half-walked and been half-carried up some of the Lakeland giants already, but being able to follow the forest trails up through Dodd Wood, playing games on the way and stopping many times for snacks and drinks, they eventually made it all the way to the top without resort to the Papoose, and could proudly say "I climbed a mountain!"

In those days the path to the summit from the last forest track was very muddy, rocky and slippery, but lately it has been improved, and since the tall trees that used to surround the summit have been felled, the views are now superb.

Because Dodd Wood is Forestry Commission land, the cache is not on Dodd itself, but is a short haul up the White Stones path from the stile at the col where Dodd joins itself to the flank of Carl Side. From here you can clearly see the summit of Dodd with Bassenthwaite Lake stretching out to either side.

To follow the waymarked forest trails up through Dodd Wood you need to start at the FC carpark N54°38.567' W003°11.227' (Pay and Display Car Park, cafe and toilets). However, an interesting alternative is to use the small layby at N54° 37.561' W003°09.420' and follow the footpath from here to the wood, then finding your way up through the trees on the public footpath and forest tracks - a steep, rough and often muddy route, but quite entertaining - this way is too tough for small children though.

Hardy fell walkers may like to carry on up from the cache to White Stones, which is a fantastic view point and a significant landmark on the steep path up Skiddaw from Millbeck.

The cache itself is a lock'n'lock box containing log book, pencil and sharpener and some swaps, including some child-friendly bits and bobs for intrepid mini-fellwalkers.
