Number 242 in the ‘Church Micro’ series.
St. Nicholas
Boughton Place cottages and the church are all that really remain of the village which grew up around the manor house of the powerful Wotton family. The Wottons prospered under Elizabeth I, and it was a Wotton who defined an ambassador as 'an honest man sent to lie abroad for the good of his country'.
In the churchyard, there is reputed to be a tombstone bearing the inscription Tom Baker 1934-? It refers to the actor who played Dr Who in the television series, who lives in the village. We couldn't find it Can you?
There is also a wrought iron lantern gate bearing the date 1897 topped with a crown - possibly because Queen Victoria once stayed at nearby Boughton Place. We doubt whether the energy saving light bulb is of that era!
If you're feeling energetic you can do this as part of our "Egerton Ramble" series of six caches on a 5 mile round walk between Egerton and Boughton Malherbe. You can also take in "Church micro 241 - Egerton".
Please ensure the cache is left securely fastened and well hidden. Thank you.
If anybody would like to expand the Church Micro series please do, we would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names, to avoid duplication
