Geocache Description:

Located at approximately 5,000 feet in elevation, this cache is one in a series dedicated to amazing & unusual organisms. I am astounded by the amazing diversity of plant and animal life that exists in this world. But the real fascination lies with those organisms that are amazing, unusual and odd.

These organisms have capabilities that we do not share and can barely imagine: extraordinary navigational methods, abilities to regenerate lost limbs, live symbiotically with light-producing bacteria, reproduce asexually, survive in suspended animation, change shape and color at will and much more!

Tortoise Beetle (Family Chrysomelidae)

These beetles often resemble a tortoise in shape and compactness. Adult - These oblong-oval beetles are basically gold in color with various black and/or red markings depending upon species. Slightly flattened and squared at the shoulders, tortoise beetles' bodies are somewhat shell-like in appearance. Body margins extend in a roof-like manner over much of the head and legs. Most species are 5 to 8 mm long.

Larva – This stage in the beetles life has a very distinctive camouflage technique. They all have black heads, legs, spots, spine-like setae, and anal forks. The anal forks are long spines near the tip of the abdomen which hold large amounts of their own excrement and molted skins to form a protective body casing. Fully grown larvae are 10 to 12 mm long.
