Located near the Old Olympia Mill.
This is # 102 in our Series Honoring(?) SC Geocachers.
It is also #5 in our "WEIRD SC" Series which will consist of caches placed at locations where either ghosts, unknown creatures, or just plain weird things have occured or exist.
So we have always had a ball heading down to the coast to chase after digndirts caches. There sure are a lot to choose from, like 67 at last count!
We have enjoyed many such as Celestial Dollars Micro - Ocean Blvd (GC109WJ); Sore Spot(GCYJ93); The Sidewheeler Cache(GCQ359); The Hidden Village Sculpture Park (GCYG3X); and the Celestial Dollars series just to name a few.
Pisces always grumbles that his caches are always harder than the set difficulty levels; and that you literally have to "dig in dirt" to find his caches!
And have you read his profile?
"Brain surgery, swimming with Australia's Irukandji, practice jingoism daily, traveling on the Einstein-Rosen Bridges, choreography for fabric-free dancers, past-life regression, cryptozoology, canoeing on the Haversian and Volkmann Canals, competitive baloot consumption , shark dentistry, foogoo tasting, writing short stories in invisible ink, rattlesnake milking, remote viewing (I know where all of the caches are), geostalking, flying kites in the katabatic winds, lifting skirts. "
Aries thinks this guy is almost catching up to HIS way of living!!!
But seriously, while we were researching digndirt SleepyRN told us that she was in awe of him.
All we could say was...
"AWWWWW!"
And this cache is located near a place said to be VERY haunted.
The Olympia Mill was built in 1899 by the W.B. Smith Whaley & Co. to be one of the largest and up to date textile mills. Children as young as 7 or 8 were allowed to work there.
Hours were long and breaks short in the sweltering heat and the fast moving machinery was dangerous.
Overseers threatened children who dawdled that if they didn't meet their quotas they would end up in the furnaces.
Many workers believed that this really happened.
Now that the old mill is being turned into upscale apartments a few of the new residents have reported some disturbig phenomena, such as crying children, running feet in the hallways, mysterious disapearences or rearrangements of toys and tools inlocked spaces, and images of small hands or faces appearing in the moisture of fogged windows.
One explanation is that while the overseer's may not have actually murdered the children they may have burned the bodies of those who died from exhaustion to forestall any investigations of the harsh conditions at the mill.
Child labor continued for over 40 years at the mill.
Besides reading many stories about this Aries has a personal connection to the Mill.
His Grandfather and Grandmoither both worked in the mill and lived up the street in Olympia.
Aries father used to ride his bike to the mill everyday to take them lunch; usually a biscuit with fatback or a small sandwich.
While both of Aries Grandparents are now dead they used to tell him stories off the harsh conditions at the mill as well as ghost stories of dead children haunting it.
Every time he passed it he felt a chill.
Aries father who is still living also told and still tells tales of the mill; but he denies ever seeing any ghosts.
But get him talking long enough and he just might tell you about that one time when........
Be very quiet when looking for this cache, especially at night.....
And after you find it look up at the old mill.....
Maybe someone is looking back!
