Rosebery Hill
I have placed this cache to mark the
occasion of my 3000th find and two years in caching.
This cache is located on Private Land by permission of
the owner who is a relative of mine
You MUST approach the cache from the area specified and
follow the suggested route.
I grew up on this
property and the hill formed the centrepiece of a busy dairy farm.
By the time I left in 1976 the land was in the process of being
converted into a vineyard. Over 20 acres of land are now under
vines specialising in cool climate red wines. Rich soil and good
rainfall has enabled this vineyard to survive without
irrigation.
As a child I roamed all
over the hill burning most of the dead trees in the process. In
1988 I went some way to rectifying this by planting a wide variety
of native trees which now dot the slopes. In that same year I
planted a metal box with a leather bound logbook for passing
visitors to record their thoughts. Unfortunately a passing group of
school children on an excursion left the lid open and ruined the
logbook.
The views from the
summit are extensive and impressive. To the south the bulk of Mt
Macedon looms and to the east the forested slopes of the Cobaw
Ranges are nearby. At 588m the summit is high enough to attract
imclement weather at any time of the year. If you look closely on
the very top rock you will see where my mother had her name carved
here in 1935.
The owner has asked that
you park your cars at the telephone exchange at the suggested
parking coordinates. These are S37 13.886 E144
33.696
This will leave you with
a walk of around 870m to the top. You will need to cross a number
of fences and if you access gates, please leave them as you found
them. Your route must keep to the left of the vineyard and may at
certain times of the year cross an electric fence. If so please
take care. Please return by the same route and do not wander far
from the top.
The cache is an ammo box
hidden amongst the rocks. It should be an easy find. There is a
scratchie provided for the FTF. Enjoy the view.
