Wie die Krähe fliegt Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Geocache Description:

A direct route.

Everyone in Euren knows the standard walk during bright sunday afternoons. It runs from Helenenbrunnen through the Hospitienwald to Markusberg with its breath-taking views of Trier.

The route leads the wanderer through an idyllic forest on entwined but well maintained roads. Slopes are decent, so nobody gets to exhausted while travelling below the canopy of slightly swaying trees. This route is, in other words, completely... boring.

On top of this, the roads are fractally tangled as if they had sprung out of an exceptionally vivid feverish dream. Walks spanning several kilometers eventually reach points that seem to be no more than a stone's throw away from previously visited places.

So, why not ignore this infernal road topology and discover interesting yet unknown sites as a side effect? Why follow gravelled forester expressways when taking the direct way is the far more natural thing to do while being on foot?

If your spontaneous response hasn't been "Because my nordic walking sticks will get entangled in the shrubs", you are welcome to follow me on such a route. Perhaps you will run a little bit out of breath, probably your hiking shoes will get muddy or even your socks wet. But you will visit some of the most interesting places in Euren forest.

The Cache is especially well suited to give the walk to Markusberg some extra kick. I recommend to start at N49°44.772' E6°36.080'. You will find the cache near N49°44.805' E6°36.089'. If you follow the stream from below, the hiding place is a few meters to the left of the water. The cache is concealed in a small cave below a rock. Use of the spoiler pic is recommended, as GPS reception is limited.

It is easier to walk up then down (believe me, I tried both), so just follow the streamlet to its source (It may be a good idea to actually get your feet wet). That way, you will eventually reach the Markusweg that leads you to Markusberg when you go to the right. (N49°45.413' E6°36.946' - Markuskapelle)

The recommended tour may easily be combined with Trier public transport. The last stop of "Stadtbus Linie 1" in Euren, Helenenbrunnen, is just a few hundred meters away from the cache. Markusberg is also connected by Stadtbus (although not on sundays).

But even if you don't extend your caching tour to Markusberg: You should at least walk a few meters up from the cache, a nice little water cascade can be seen there. The surrounding forest is also worth a second glance. It's something like a natural jungle, studded with impressive rock formations.

But in any way, your are free to choose the routes you like. But always remember: The shortest connection between to points is a straight line.

Have fun!

Bad weather conditions generally may increase terrain ratings significantly.
This is especially true for this cache when searching it during or after rain periods!

Attention: There are hordes of wild boars and other animals in this area. Edible or strong and aromatic smelling stuff is absolutely taboo! Even touching the cache after eating your sandwich may be a bad idea...
